India Gets First Openly LGBTQ+ Voice in Parliament: Menaka Guruswamy Makes History

India has taken a historic step toward LGBTQ+ representation, with senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy emerging as the country’s first openly queer voice in Parliament.

Guruswamy, a prominent Supreme Court lawyer, was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Her election marks a significant milestone for the LGBTQ+ community in India, bringing direct representation to the nation’s legislative system for the first time.

Widely known for her role in the landmark 2018 case that decriminalised homosexuality in India, Guruswamy has been a long-standing advocate for constitutional rights, equality, and inclusion.

Her entry into Parliament is being seen as a powerful moment for visibility and progress, especially in a country where LGBTQ+ rights continue to evolve. If elected, she would become India’s first openly LGBTQ+ Member of Parliament, highlighting a growing shift toward acceptance and representation.

The move has sparked conversations across the country, with many viewing it as a positive step toward inclusive policymaking and stronger representation of marginalized communities.

While challenges remain for LGBTQ+ rights in India, this development signals a new chapter in the country’s political and social landscape.
